Lakshadweep Islands are approximately 200 km off the west coast of southern India in Arabian Sea. Lakshadweep island chain comprises of 27 islands along with coral atolls and sand banks. Kadmat Island also known as Cardamom Island is one of these islands belonging to Amindvi subgroup of islands. It is the center most island of the Lakshadweep archipelago, in the shape of a tear drop, with 3.2 square kilometres area. Kadmat village is the only inhabited village on the island. It has a length of 8 kilometres North to South with a maximum width of about few hundred meters at the middle. Its southern end is the narrowest with a width of only about 50 metres.

The island's topography is about 2–3 metres above the sea level. Its surface formation consists of coral conglomerate overlying broken pieces of coral and coral sand. The lagoon of the island extends over a width of 1.5 km covering an area of 37 square kilometres and the water depth is shallow about 2–3 metres only. It has a sandy beach.

The major port of Kochi is 407 km away. The nearest airport to the island is located at Agatti Island and there are regular flights from Cochin. The common way of transport is by ferry which takes about two and half hours from Agatti Island. There are also Ferry services which take 16 hours journey from Kochi.
